When determining start up cost for your photography business it is important to understand what your main goals are, and what type of photography you will be focusing on. This is because certain types of photography may require different types of equipment. For example, if you primarily do outdoor portraits you may want to purchase a sun diffuser and specific lighting equipment that can be used outdoors. Otherwise, if you primarily shoot in studio you will need different types of studio lighting, backdrops, stands, etc. However, here is a basic list of equipment I think most photographers would need and the general price range.
1) A Camera and a good lens- This most obvious answer is not as simple as you may think... Cameras can range anywhere from $600-$800 for a beginner camera, to thousands of dollars for the more advanced professional level cameras. The biggest advice I have for this is to do your research and learn what camera specs you are looking for. The same goes for any lens you may buy. There are some cameras where you can buy them as a kit which includes a basic adjustable lens. I recommend this for any beginning photographer who is learning the ropes of operating a camera as it is the best way to get your photography business going.
2) An external flash. This can range from anywhere from $75-$200 depending on the quality of flash you get, but is useful for any poor indoor lighting, and is cheaper then buying bulkier external lights.
3) A few extra camera batteries and sim cards- These normally run only about $35-$50 and will save you when your battery unexpectedly dies or you run out of card space mid shoot.
4) A tripod- these cost anywhere from $50-$200 and are nice If you ever have poor lighting, or are shooting in studio. It is always smart to have a good sturdy tripod.
5) A good camera bag- These run anywhere from $50-$200 but its always better to protect your equipment.
These are just a few things that every photographer should have when starting a business. That being said, always do your own research and figure out what you may need for your specific photography business. For any other photographers who may read this please feel free to comment any advice on equipment you may have!
