What If It Rains On Your Engagement Shoot Day? (Don't Panic- Read This First!)

If there’s one question I get all the time from couples planning their engagement session, it’s this:
“What happens if it rains?”
And I get it — you’ve been planning your outfits, dreaming about golden light, picturing those perfect NYC backdrops… and suddenly the forecast shows rain. 😅
But here’s the truth:
👉 Rain doesn’t ruin your engagement photos.
👉 Sometimes… it actually makes them better.
Let me explain.
⸻
☁️ First Things First: We Always Have a Plan
When you book with me, you’re never just crossing your fingers and hoping for good weather.
I always:
• Keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session
• Stay in communication with you
• Offer flexibility when possible
• Help you decide what’s best for your vision
If the weather looks truly miserable (heavy rain, storms, high winds), we can absolutely reschedule.
But if it’s light rain or passing showers? That’s where the magic can happen ✨
⸻
🌧️ Rainy Engagement Photos Can Be So Romantic
Some of the most beautiful, emotional sessions I’ve photographed have been in the rain.
Think:
• Cozy moments under umbrellas
• Soft, moody skies
• Reflections on the pavement
• Fewer crowds in popular NYC spots
• That cinematic, “Notebook” kind of feeling
Rain naturally brings you closer together — and that connection shows in your photos 💛
⸻
☂️ How to Prepare for a Rainy Engagement Session
If you decide to embrace the rain (or it’s just a light drizzle), here are a few simple tips:
1. Bring a Cute Umbrella
Clear umbrellas photograph beautifully and let light through — they’re my go-to recommendation!
2. Choose the Right Shoes
You might be walking on wet sidewalks or grass, so bring:
• Backup shoes
• Something with grip
• Or a second pair to change into
3. Keep Outfits Simple + Comfortable
Avoid fabrics that cling too much when wet, and stick with colors that won’t become see-through in the rain.
4. Embrace It
The couples who end up LOVING their photos the most are the ones who lean into the experience.
Laugh, get a little messy, stay close — that’s where the magic is.
⸻
🌇 Rain Often Means Better Light
This surprises a lot of people, but:
👉 Overcast skies = soft, flattering light
No harsh shadows.
No squinting.
Just beautiful, even tones that photograph incredibly well.
So even if we’re not shooting in the rain, cloudy days are actually ideal for photos.
⸻
🔁 When Rescheduling Makes Sense
Of course, there are times when rescheduling is the better option.
We’ll consider rescheduling if:
• There’s heavy, nonstop rain
• Thunderstorms are expected
• It would take away from the experience you want
My goal is always to make sure your session feels:
✔ relaxed
✔ fun
✔ true to you
⸻
💛 My Honest Advice
If you’re feeling stressed about the forecast, here’s what I always tell my couples:
Don’t let the weather take away from this experience.
Your engagement session isn’t just about photos — it’s about:
• celebrating this season of your life
• spending intentional time together
• creating memories you’ll actually remember
And sometimes, the unexpected (like a little rain) ends up making it even more special.
