Some people might think that the way you run a photography business would not differ much from state to state. While for the most part this is true, there are a few things that have changed about how I run my business since moving to NYC. Firstly, I had a lot of connections in Maine that I did not have in New York. So, now that I've moved, I have had to focus most of my energy on marketing and making new connections compared to just doing reach outs to people I already knew. Additionally, I have had to adjust to different types of photography that are more popular here in New York. In Maine a lot of my jobs were family shoots and took place in the fall, however, in New York a lot of people are looking for fashion shoots. This has been great because it has allowed me to work with a lot of cool models as well as expand my skills/portfolio, and make connections with other photographers. Lastly, and probably the biggest change I have had to adjust too since moving to New York, is shoot locations. Most of my shoots in Maine revolved around parks with a bunch of beautiful trees and landscapes. Here in New York I have had to get creative with some of my shoot locations. For example, I have used popular tourist spots, or even just random streets with a lot of cool shops and decor as locations for my shoots. Moving my photography business to New York has been an exciting challenge and I couldn't be more grateful because it has opened up many new avenues for me to grow my skills as a photographer.
