One of the most asked questions I get as a photographer is "What is the best time to schedule a shoot in order to get the best lighting?" This is a tricky question and there are a lot of possible answers. From a photographer's perspective golden hour (The first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset) are always great options and make for some beautiful photos. However, working with the lighting that golden hour gives you is not always the easiest. Additionally, lighting is very weather dependent. If it is a more cloudy day I wouldn't be as picky about time of a shoot as I would when it is really sunny out. When it is super sunny out there is the potential for really harsh highlights and shadows. So in that case, I personally would try to schedule my shoot for a time that was right before or after the peak height of the sun. So approximately around 9am-11am or 1:00-3pm. In this case I would also make sure to find a location for the shoot that has a variety of shaded and open options in case the lighting caused any trouble. That being said what works for me is not necessarily the widely accepted answer, every photographer has to find their own groove. What are some of your favorite times to shoot when it comes to lighting?
