Fall in New York is pure magic and one of my favorite seasons for family photos— golden leaves, cozy layers, and that soft, dreamy light that makes every photo look timeless. 🍂
But as a photographer (and someone who’s worked with a lot of families!), I know that fall photo day can also feel… a little chaotic. Between getting everyone dressed, keeping the kids happy, and hoping the weather cooperates — it’s a lot!
Thats why I’ve put together a few tried-and-true tips to help your fall family session feel relaxed, fun, and full of genuine smiles!
1️⃣ Choose Comfort Over Perfection
Yes, matching outfits are cute — but comfort matters more! Pick clothes that feel good and let everyone move naturally.
Think cozy sweaters, layered neutrals, and textures like knits, corduroy, or flannel. Avoid anything too tight or scratchy — happy, comfortable kids = happy, relaxed photos.
2️⃣ Coordinate, Don’t Match
Choose a color palette instead of identical outfits.
Warm tones (cream, mustard, rust, navy, forest green) always photograph beautifully against fall leaves.
Lay everything out together before your session — if it all looks good side-by-side, you’re golden!
3️⃣ Bring the Essentials
Snacks, wipes, water, maybe a favorite toy — the little things go a long way when photographing kids outdoors.
If your session’s in a park, toss everything in a small tote so it’s easy to grab when needed.
4️⃣ Let Go of “Perfect”
The best photos aren’t the ones where everyone’s standing still — they’re the ones where your kids are laughing, running, or snuggling into your arms.
Trust me: real moments beat perfect smiles every time.
5️⃣ Think About Timing
Golden hour (the hour before sunset) gives you that soft, glowing light that makes skin tones and fall colors look magical.
If your little ones do better earlier in the day, we can find shaded spots that still look warm and glowy — I’ll help you choose the best time for your family.
6️⃣ Make It an Experience
Turn your photo session into a family outing!
Grab hot cocoa afterward, plan a park picnic, or stop by your favorite bakery. When it feels like a fun family day instead of “picture day,” everyone relaxes — and it shows in your photos.
7️⃣ Trust Your Photographer 😉
My job isn’t just to take pretty pictures — it’s to help you feel comfortable, natural, and connected.
I’ll guide you through every pose (and non-pose), help with outfit choices, and make sure we get a mix of candid and classic shots you’ll love for years.
